Mode of delivery: Online

Duration: 6 weeks

Start date: 29 March 2025

Scheduled Class times: 09h00 – 13h00 every Saturday

In addition to live online classes, participants will need to complete approximately 3 hours per week watching lectures and completing relevant exercises, so that you can master the skill learnt during class time.

Total Credits: Non-credit bearing

Certification: Certificate of attendance (students must have attended the complete course and completed in-class exercises. A formal assessment is not included as part of the course)

Requirements:

Software – Stopmotion Studio (free phone app, can upgrade to Pro version to get extra features at an additional R115 once off payment)

Internet – Ensure that you have sufficient bandwidth and data to join video calls.

What is covered in the course?

The Stop Motion animation course provides a comprehensive introduction to the art and craft of stop motion, introducing students to its rich history and evolution. Participants will learn about the different mediums and techniques used in stop motion, from clay animation to shadow puppets, while examining examples from iconic films, shows, and advertisements. The course emphasizes the importance of planning and preparation, covering storyboarding, thumbnails, and puppet design to help students develop well-thought-out animations.

Students will be introduced to the 12 principles of animation, with a focus on key principles like squash and stretch, timing and spacing, ease in and ease out, and arcs.

Through hands-on exercises, they will explore different camera setups, such as top-down and side views, to understand their applications. The course also introduces students to the creation of puppets, using support rigs, and introduces basic compositing techniques like wire removal and adding title cards.

This course is delivered through live demonstrations, recorded lessons, and curated resources. This course equips students with an introduction to the tools and knowledge to create engaging stop motion animations.

No prior experience is needed—just a passion for creativity and a willingness to experiment!

What will students be able to do upon completion of the course?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Create basic and engaging stop motion animations using your smartphones with different types of material, like clay and wire.
  2. Have a basic understanding of storyboarding and thumbnailing to assist in planning animation.
  3. Basic knowledge and skills in using the Stop Motion Studio app to create simple animations.
  4. Basic understanding of 12 principles of animation.
  5. Understand how to set up two different shooting styles (one top down and one side on), with lighting, camera and background set ups.
