How to apply?

Everything You Need to Know About the Application Process

Follow these steps to ensure your application is complete and meets our requirements.

Step one

Prepare your portfolio

All applicants are required to present a portfolio of artwork. Your portfolio must include:

Six to twelve additional original artworks you’ve personally created in the past three years.


You can include pieces created in any medium: illustrations, paintings, graphic design, sculptures, digital artworks, animations, or any other medium you feel showcases your creative skills.



Your portfolio will be assessed against the following criteria:


• Overall impression
• Proportions
• Technique
• Shading
• Storytelling (comic strip) 


No traced, copied, or AI-generated work will be accepted.

Step two

Compile your portfolio

Scan or photograph your artworks (including the comic strip) and compile your portfolio into a single PDF document.

You may include links to any short films or animations you’ve created, but this is not a requirement.

Step three

Write a Letter of Motivation

Write a one-page (A4) motivation letter telling us why you want to study at The Animation School.

Complete the Application Form

Once you have compiled your portfolio, click any ‘Apply Now’ button on this page and complete the online application form. You can save and continue later if you need to. Check to make sure you’ve completed all the fields in the application form. Then, upload the following:

Step five

Attend the Interview

You will be notified via email whether you have been accepted or not within two weeks of submitting your application.

If your application is accepted, you’ll be invited to an online interview using Microsoft Teams. A successful interview means you can officially register and pay your deposit to secure your spot.

If you’re eager to develop strong drawing skills, are curious about people and the world around you, have a passion for visual storytelling, and are willing to put in long hours to bring characters and stories to life, we invite you to apply.

 

Experience in art and drama will support the more creative aspects of animation, while mathematical and logical thinking skills will benefit those looking to focus on the technical side. If you want to explore specific areas of animation or sharpen your skills, our short courses can help you develop and grow where you need it.

Entry requirements for the Diploma in Digital Animation are as follows: 

 

1. Portfolio of Artwork
You are required to present a portfolio of artwork for assessment. 

 

2. Computer Literacy 
You should be able to use a personal computer confidently and be familiar with Windows or Mac operating systems.

 

3. Minimum Qualifications 
You should have a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with admission to a Diploma or Bachelor's Degree or a National Certificate (Vocational) Level

 

4. You must have achieved at least 50% in three fundamental subjects, including English, and at least 60% in the three compulsory vocational subjects.

 

If you are an international student with foreign qualifications, you must apply to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to have your qualifications evaluated. For more information about applying as an international student, click here.

Applications close on 31 January 2026.

Our 2026 tuition fees for South African and other African students range between R123,900 and R135,000 (subject to your payment schedule).

 

Tuition for international students costs R157,300, with the full amount due on registration.

 

The tuition fees for the online diploma are the same as the on-campus programme, as both offer the same high-quality qualification, academic support, and access to expert lecturers.

 

Tuition fees include free access to Autodesk Maya, Adobe Suite, and Toonboom Harmony, but exclude any compulsory books, other software, digital drawing equipment and/or removable hard drives required to complete day-to-day responsibilities. All students should budget an additional R3,000 per year for these expenses.

Yes. If you’re 23 or older and have relevant experience in the field, you may apply through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. You’ll need to follow the usual application steps and request the RPL application when you submit your portfolio. Applications for RPL also close on 31 October 2025.

The Animation School only awards internal scholarships in second and third year to students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, skill, and work ethic.

National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) offers bursaries to talented South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applications typically open in July for a limited two-month window.

 

Oasis Bursary Programme provides support for students through its award-winning investment firm.

 

MultiChoice Talent Factory offers full tuition bursaries for students entering second year or higher at qualifying institutions.

 

Nestlé Bursary Programme is focused on upskilling young talent through education support.

We encourage students to begin their funding search early and reach out to these organisations directly to explore the best options available.

We offer three settlement options for paying fees. The first option is to pay the settlement in full, the second is to pay the settlement in four equal instalments, and the third is to pay the settlement in 10 equal instalments. Please see the Prospectus for more information on these payment structures.

No, The Animation School currently does not offer scholarships. 

No, an application fee is not required.

You will receive feedback on the outcome of your application within two weeks of submitting your portfolio.
