Intro to Motion Graphics Course

This course covers the essentials of motion graphics design. You’ll animate shapes and text, integrate Adobe Illustrator artwork, track footage, and use chroma keying to create polished visual compositions.

Still have questions? 

The Introduction to Motion Graphics course is delivered entirely online over the course of six weeks. Live classes take place on Thursdays from 17:30 to 19:30, taught by experienced facilitators. 

In addition to these weekly online classes, you’ll need to spend around three hours per week watching lectures and completing practical exercises on your own. Use this self-study time to practise the skills and After Effects techniques you learn in class. 

The next cohort starts 2 October 2025.

Yes. Students who attend all sessions and complete the required exercises will receive a certificate of attendance from The Animation School. A formal assessment is not included as part of the course.

This course is designed for anyone interested in creating animated graphics for video, online content, or presentations. It’s open to high school learners (Grade 8–12), students, and professionals with basic computer skills.

Animation Professionals: Develop skills in a different part of the animation pipeline to broaden your expertise and career opportunities.

No prior motion graphics experience is required. You’ll be guided through each topic step by step, starting with the basics of Adobe After Effects and building toward more advanced techniques.

The Introduction to Motion Graphics short course costs R3,900.

If you’ve previously completed a short course through The Animation School, you qualify for a 10% discount.

There are currently no bursaries available for short courses.

You’ll need access to Adobe After Effects for the duration of the course. If you don’t already have it, Adobe offers a free trial that you can download before the first class.

Adobe After Effects is one of the most widely used tools for motion graphics. In this course, you’ll learn to use it for animation, compositing, and integrating vector artwork.

You’ll need stable internet access to join video calls, and we recommend investing in a headset with a microphone and a three-button mouse.

 

You’ll also need a computer with the following minimum specs:

 

• Microsoft Windows 10 or the latest Mac OS

• 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)

• 64-bit Intel or AMD multi-core processor

• 4GB of free disk space for installing After Effects

Motion graphics skills can be used to create animated elements for videos, presentations, and online content. They are in demand in industries like advertising, marketing, film, television, and social media. Skilled motion designers can work in agencies, studios, or as freelancers.

Yes. Motion graphics can make your videos more engaging and professional. You can create animated intros, titles, and visual effects to improve the quality of your content.

Motion graphics focuses on animated text, shapes, and graphics to communicate ideas, while visual effects (VFX) involve adding or altering elements in live-action footage. This course focuses on motion graphics but also touches on compositing techniques used in VFX.

It’s a full-time, three-year qualification that prepares you for work in the animation industry through hands-on training, studio production experience, and professional development. Many students use the Intro to Motion Graphics course as a first step before committing to full-time study.
