Our Story

With a singular focus on animation, The Animation School has grown alongside —and helped shape— the animation industry. From the start, we’ve partnered with industry professionals and tracked global trends to design programmes that prepare graduates for the realities of the studio—empowering them to create, contribute, and thrive from day one.

25 Years of Milestones

Since opening our doors in 2000, The Animation School has grown into one of the world’s top institutions for animation education. Not only are our graduates sought after worldwide, but we’re also respected for steering the industry from the classroom outward.

2000

The Animation School Officially Registers

Two visionaries—Nuno Martins and Peter den Hartogh—ask a bold question that would change South African animation forever: “Why do so many graduates leave college unprepared for the demands of the studio?”

On 18 July 1918 (Nelson Mandela’s birthday), they open The Animation School as the answer to this question. Their idea for The Animation School is not about chasing prestige. It is about serving the industry by producing graduates who are studio-ready from day one.

2001

The First Class of Students Starts

In a single Cape Town classroom, 30 eager students join the first class of 2001.

The school’s ethos is simple: keep it real, keep it relevant. Every critique, every assignment, and every film is measured against world-class standards.

The School Moves and Expands

Having outgrown its humble beginnings, The Animation School moves to a bigger space in Woodstock. It also expands its diploma to three years, aligning with feature-film expectations.

Leadership Changes and Johannesburg Campus Launches

The Animation School enters its next leadership chapter as Peter den Hartogh steps back and Nuno Martins assumes sole leadership.

At the same time, Rhiannon Reid joins as Academic Director, ensuring The Animation School’s growing curriculum aligns with both industry demands and regulatory standards. This growth is driven in large part by passionate lecturers who shape the curriculum and inspire students to produce excellent work.

The Animation School also launches its Johannesburg campus, becoming a truly national institution.
